Rapid opening paves the way for Glanworth

Glanworth 1-14 Glenville 1-9: It all started to go wrong for Glenville in the opening minutes when Glanworth opened up a four-point lead in this challenging Cork IFC round one battle at Rathcormac yesterday.

Rapid opening paves the way for Glanworth

Actually, there was no way back for a battling Glenville side once they ended up on the wrong side of the scoreboard in those first six minutes.

They fought hard but Glanworth always held an edge once they set out the ground rules, having already won an important league fixture between the sides by seven points recently.

Yesterday, the opening points came from David Pyne (2), Rob O’Driscoll, and Michael Sheehan before Glanville could breathe.

Ben Halbert hit back with a point but Diarmuid Golfer struck again to establish a 0-5 to 0-1 lead inside the opening quarter.

Yes, Glenville struck back and there was nothing between the teams right through to the interval, Pyne, Colfer, and Sheehan responding to points from Kevin O’Neill and Paudie Cahill. Glanworth led by 0-8 to 0-3 at the break.

When Sheehan hit with a brilliant goal within a minute of the restart, it appeared to be all over, but Sheehan had to respond twice with points to help his side battle against a Ciaran Coakley goal and points from Halbert and Paudie Cahill.

At the three-quarter stage, Glanworth were 1-11 to 1-6 in front but it was still all to play for.

Michael Pierce hit a point and Sheehan had two more, one from a free, to respond to anything a determined Glenville could throw at them.

The winners battened down the hatches after that, forced Glenville back into defence and really never looked like relinquishing their advantage.

Coach James Condon acknowledged it was a tough encounter: “We had to fight all the way, we are just pleased to have got through as winners and we will now take it one game at a time from here on.”

Glanworth will meet the winners of the first round tie between Rockchapel and Youghal. It’s looking good for them right now.
