Armagh enjoyed a spring-heeled start to the game and a gem of a point by half-back Stephen Sheridan helped them lead by 0-3 to 0-0 lead after just five minutes but then their form simply nosedived.
The Orchard County found themselves perched on the slippery slope for most of the first half and even two classy Stefan Campbell frees couldn’t prevent them trailing by 0-5 to 1-11 at the interval.
The tide had turned inexorably in Cavan’s favour in the 7th minute when Seanie Johnston pick-pocketed a rare goal after David Givney caused a nuisance of himself on the edge of the small square.
Eight unanswered points followed from the Breffni men with the in-form Johnston notching four of those and midfield colleague Gearoid McKiernan knocking over a brace of frees to boot.
Armagh were their own worst enemies in part, carrying the ball into tackles in the last third and being too indecisive when in possession.
On a bitterly cold night, both teams did their best to distract the good-sized crowd from the elements but Armagh didn’t buy into the plan and failed miserably to make a contest of it.
Kieran McGeeney’s side matched their five first half points in the second half but managed to concede a whopping 2-7 with majors from Givney and McKiernan in the 54th and 60th minutes respectively adding to the misery of the visitors.
Armagh were on the retreat for all but fleeting minutes of the second half and but for a scuffed goal attempt by sub. Andrew Murnin early in the second half created nothing of any consequence close to Cavan’s goal.
