Wexford boost as PJ Banville returns

PJ Banville has provided Wexford football boss David Power with a timely New Year boost.

Wexford boost as PJ Banville returns

Banville missed out on the county’s 2015 league and championship campaigns after moving to New York, but still managed to make an impact with his new club.

The outstanding corner-forward assisted New York in the Connacht championship while also helping Kerry to the football championship title.

Now Banville has returned home and decided to commit to Wexford for 2016. Although not included in Sunday’s O’Byrne Cup squad for their clash with holders Dublin, Power confirmed Banville will be joining up with the football squad in the new year.

“PJ has committed to the football set-up for 2016. Along with Dáithí Waters, who has returned from the hurlers, they will provide an ideal boost to the younger players in the set-up. It’s a big boost both will be available to us next year, particularly as we seek promotion back to Division 3 of the league.”

Power will not be calling on either player for Sunday’s game as Waters is recovering from ankle surgery, while Banville will step up his physical preparations over the coming weeks.

He will also be without the injured Ciaran Lyng, Graeme Molloy, Shane Roche and Michael Furlong, while Rob Tierney is on holidays.

Still he has named quite a strong selection for the game which he sees as the ideal start to the year.

‘What better than to start the year against the All-Ireland champions,’ said Power.
