David Treacy scoring ace in cracking Cuala effort

Coolderry (Offaly) 0-12 Cuala (Dublin) 1-23: Cuala produced a devastating performance to completely overwhelm Offaly champions Coolderry in Tullamore, eventually recording a 14-point victory over the 2012 All-Ireland finalists.

A late goal from Mark Schutte was the icing on the cake for the Dalkey side. But while the Dublin corner-forward delivered the final blow, it was David Treacy’s immaculate record from frees that was the main ingredient in the substantial winning margin, as he was on target with each of his 12 placed ball opportunities.

“David Treacy was really good today and at this time of year frees are vital,” said Cuala manager Mattie Kenny afterwards.

Coolderry were competitive in the opening phases despite playing into the breeze but they soon lost their way at midfield and half-forward, where Cuala proved dominant under the puck-out and also in the battle for loose possession on the ground.

Hard running from the Cuala forwards drew fouls out of the less mobile Coolderry back division, containing four starters in their thirties, and Treacy duly helped the Dubs into a 0-12 to 0-6 interval lead.

“Not a winning lead,” was how Kenny described that gap, but Coolderry couldn’t make any real inroads in the third quarter and their race was effectively run when Brian Carroll was sent off on the advice of an umpire for an off-the-ball altercation with Cuala wing-back Shane Stapleton.

The Dublin champions moved through the gears in the final quarter, though a series of saves from Stephen Corcoran prevented them from adding more goals before Schutte netted.

The victory sets up a semi-final clash with Clara of Kilkenny next Sunday, and Kenny brushed off any notion that three games in 15 days would be a problem for his players.

“When you’re successful, big matches will keep coming at you.

“If you want rest this time of the year then you’re better off going out early in the championship.

“We’d prefer to be preparing for Clara next week than sitting at home!”
