The ‘Kilkenny of Kerry hurling’ ready for a tight county final

Kilmoyley boss John Meyler insists tomorrow’s county hurling final with St Brendan’s (Abbeydorney, 2.30pm) is too close to call.

“Every game in Kerry is a 50/50 game,” says Meyler whose involvement with Kilmoyley began in 2001.

St Brendan’s manager Pat O’Driscoll also doubles up as boss of the football side of their sister club Ardfert, and he has guided them to three All-Ireland Club successes in Croke Park.

Both sides started the championship campaign slowly, with Kilmoyley needing a replay to get past Crotta O’Neill’s in the opening round, but then gathered momentum with wins over Abbeydorney and Ballyduff.

St Brendan’s had to travel the scenic route having lost their first-round game against Abbeydorney. They edged out Ballyheigue by a point, but burst into life when hammering Causeway 4-16 to 1-8 and then knocking out champions Lixnaw in the semi-final (2-15 to 1-12).

Meyler may well have to do without one of his top defenders, Tom Murnane, who fractured ribs in the semi-final. “Tom Murnane had a serious injury in the semi-final and we would not expect him to be near the team on Sunday. St Brendan’s are a superb team. It will come down to the day. We are a young side and I would be pleased for them if they can win.”

St Brendan’s counterpart O’Driscoll is happy also to indulge in some mind games “John Meyler is a great coach and he would know all the Kilmoyley lads well. Adrian Royle is a serious threat up front with the experienced campaigners. They are the Kilkenny of Kerry hurling, so we are under no illusions about the task we face. But we still will have a right go and see what happens.”
