Longford seeking new leader as Jack Sheedy steps down

Longford GAA chiefs are on the hunt for a new senior football manager after Jack Sheedy resigned the post on Tuesday night.

Sheedy informed the Longford executive of his decision late on Tuesday, citing the impact of the job on his family life as the primary reason for departing.

The former Dublin footballer is the third inter-county football manager to resign in the space of four days, Tipperary’s Peter Creedon and Derry Brian McIver’s stepping off the managerial carousel over the weekend.

Sheedy spent two years at the helm and although promotion to Division 3 of the league was secured earlier this year, their championship involvement ground to a halt following heavy beatings to Dublin and Kildare respectively, the Lilywhites inflicting a 2-24 to 0-11 hammering on Saturday week last.

“In his letter of resignation Jack noted the huge amount of time and commitment he had given to the role over the past two years which ultimately impacted on other areas of his life and for that reason Jack has decided to devote more time to his family,” said the statement released yesterday by Longford GAA.

“Longford GAA’s executive committee thank Jack and his backroom team for their efforts over the past two years and wish them well in whatever role they decide to take up in the future.

“Jack had a successful first year with our U21s and, after a slow start at senior level, brought Longford out of Division 4 this current year and gave us our longest run in the qualifiers in a number of years. Jack successfully moulded a number of players to senior ranks following on from the retirement of a number of vastly experienced players.”
