Milford 1-18 Ballygarvan 1-11: Free-scoring Milford cruised effortlessly through their Cork IHC fourth-round clash with Ballygarvan at Coachford last night, emerging triumphantly with a well-rounded performance in both halves with and against a stiff breeze.

Star of the show was skipper Patrick O’Regan who contributed 1-9 of his side’s total, to include an all-important 1-3 in the third quarter when Ballygarvan desperately needed to impose themselves on a contest that was slipping away from them at the interval.

Milford’s long journey to Coachford was well worthwhile as they built strongly on a five points lead at half time to all but break the Ballygarvan challenge following those crucial scores from O’Regan. At 1-13 to 0-6 by the three quarter mark, there was really no way back for the losers.

Ballygarvan had a bright enough start with a couple of early points from their scoring ace Mark Kennefick and Milford certainly didn’t have it all their way in the first 15, having to battle for a 0-5 to 0-2 lead with a couple of points from O’Regan and others from Darragh Hannigan, Cillian O’Gorman and Anthony Watson.

Although Ballygarvan had a better return of three points in the build up to half time, Milford still pushed further ahead with the O’Gorman’s Cillian and Henry, O’Regan (2) and Seamus Whelan all adding points to let their side 0-10 to 0-5 to the good.

Against the breeze, the winners performed even more admirably than they had in the first half and Ballygarvan were stunned by the aggression shown right through the Milford ranks.

A rock solid defence provided the foundation for the success but it was O’Regan’s scoring contribution immediately after the break that spurred them on to a thoroughly deserved victory.

He pointed two minutes into the second half and then smashed home a sixth minute goal when he was first to strike in a goal mouth scramble after delivery from Hannigan. Kennefick did his best to steady the ship for Ballygarvan with a 38th minute point but two more from O’Regan put his side even more firmly in control.

With a 10 point lead, Milford were coasting but never attempted to rest on their laurels. Yes, they were out scored in that closing quarter, but were never really in any danger of letting their control of the game slip.

Needless to mention, the big scorers of the night got back on the sheet, with Kennefick and O’Regan each pointing twice as the teams notched five points apiece. The difference in scoring came through Ballygarvan’s goal which was credited to Mark O’Callaghan after his delivery from distance appeared to beat everyone on the way to the net.
