Sweet revenge as Kildare finally get edge on Dublin

Kildare 3-16 Dublin 3-13: A devastating scoring blitz before half-time paved the way for Kildare’s victory over Paddy Christie’s Dublin in yesterday’s Electric Ireland Leinster minor football semi-final at Croke Park.

Sweet revenge as Kildare finally get edge on Dublin

The Lilywhites advanced to a third successive provincial decider and will face Longford on July 12 as they look to reclaim the crown lost to Dublin last year.

They not only gained revenge for that 2014 reverse, but also a Leinster League final defeat against the Sky Blues in March.

Five points separated the teams on that occasion, but Kildare turned the tables in style at GAA HQ.

Dublin dominated for spells in the first half, but somehow trailed by six points at the break, 2-5 to 2-11.

Christie’s young guns registered seven wides before the break, including three in the first two minutes, as they opened with intent, attacking the Hill 16 end.

With the breeze at their backs, Dublin were 2-2 to 0-4 clear within 17 minutes, Tom Fox and Shane Howard scoring the goals.

However, Kildare rallied with Matthew Kelly’s goal five minutes before half-time to level proceedings.

After the sides traded the next two points, Kildare opened up with an unanswered 1-3 to lead by six at the break.

Kildare’s second goal arrived courtesy of a Rory Feely penalty, awarded for overcarrying by Dublin goalkeeper Evan Comerford.

Dublin never recovered and Kildare went on to lead by nine points in the second half, with Jimmy Aylmer burying their third goal 18 minutes from time.

Dublin, to their credit, kept going right until the end and pulled a goal back in stoppage time, when Paddy Small netted a penalty.
