Brolly ‘still cringing’ over Marty remarks

RTÉ pundit Joe Brolly has admitted he is mortified by the insulting remarks he made about colleague Marty Morrissey on the Sunday Game Live at the weekend.

Brolly found himself in hot water after a misjudged remark when he labelled Cavan’s style of play “as ugly as Marty Morrissey”.

The controversial pundit was publicly censured by RTÉ Head of Sport Ryle Nugent, who described the remarks as “inappropriate and extremely hurtful” and insisted a repeat would not be tolerated.

In his column yesterday in Gaelic Life, Brolly admitted he was still cringing about the remarks and blamed a jovial pre-match atmosphere between himself and fellow pundit Tomás Ó Sé.

“Myself and Tomás Ó Sé had been having a laugh with stewards and supporters outside just before we went on air,” Brolly explained. “All jokes and craic.”

“Problem is that when we went on air a few minutes later, it wasn’t the Oliver Callan Show, but the Sunday Game.”

Brolly admitted he sensed Morrissey was offended by the remarks, though he accepted an apology immediately.

“Marty Morrissey is a decent, good humoured man,” Brolly wrote. “When I apologised to him he was quick to accept it. But there is no doubt he was hurt. It was a very poor thing to say and I am still cringing about it as I write this.”
