John Divilly’s UCD face tough task to halt charge of DCU in Sigerson Cup
A repeat of last year’s quarter-final clash in which UCD scored a surprise victory. John Divilly’s charges were most disappointing against UUJ in the semi-final and will be determined to go at least one step further this time around — UCD’s last final appearance arrived back in 2003. Ruled out through injury are Tommy Moolick (knee), James McEntee (foot) and Eoin Lowry (hamstring).
DCU arrive in Cork having outclassed favourites UUJ on their home turf. A five-point interval deficit was subsequently pegged back away to St Mary’s in the quarter-final. Captain Tom Flynn and Davey Byrne are both doubts for Niall Moyna’s side.
The key match-ups that, ultimately, will decide this contest include Conor Boyle’s marshalling of UCD’s John Heslin, the shadowing of Jack McCaffrey by either of DCU half-backs Colm Begley or Conor Moynagh and Monaghan corner-back Ryan Wylie’s covering of DCU talisman Conor McHugh.
Billy Morgan was less than impressed with UCC’s quarter-final performance against IT Sligo, but a comfortable five-point win secured without the services of Cork midfielder Ian Maguire, Kerry forward Paul Geaney and Austin Stacks corner-back Fergal McNamara highlights the strength in depth of this UCC squad.
Both Maguire (back) and Geaney (hip) have overcome recent setbacks, but are expected to be held in reserve this afternoon. In their absence, David Harrington is a likely starter — the Adrigole forward raising his hand for selection when kicking three points from play last week.
CIT and IT Sligo plugged holes in the UCC defence when attacking through the central channel, a tactic IT Carlow would be wise to employ. But the reigning champions shouldn’t have to move beyond third gear to return to the decider.
