LIT chief raises fears over Fitzgibbon move

A leading Irish academic has warned GAA chiefs against switching prestigious third-level championship competitions to a pre-Christmas slot.

LIT chief raises fears over Fitzgibbon move

Dr Maria Hinfelaar, President of Limerick Institute of Technology, believes any alteration to schedules will create chaos for students.

There have been fresh calls to complete the Sigerson and Fitzgibbon Cups before Christmas, in an effort to deal with an already crammed fixtures calendar.

But speaking at the launch of the Fitzgibbon Cup at LIT yesterday, Dr Hinfelaar said: “The formula currently in place is a successful one and works very well. Having the championships running from the end of January into February gives plenty of time for teams to prepare but, more importantly, it does not interfere with the exams schedule. Here at LIT, and the same applies for many third-level institutions, we have first semester exams in December and moving the championships back to that time of the year would interfere with the academic programme. If moving the competition back to then is going to solve one problem, it’s going to create a far bigger one.”

LIT host the Fitzgibbon Cup finals weekend on February 27/28.
