Jimmy Barry-Murphy content as new skipper Anthony Nash leads Cork home

Cork 1-26 UCC 2-12: The heavy rain and wind didn’t make for a great spectacle, but there were some bright spots for Cork manager Jimmy Barry-Murphy as his side retained the Canon O’Brien Cup by beating UCC at the Mardyke last night.

Leading by 1-13 to 1-7 at half-time, Cork conceded an Anthony Spillane goal early in the second half but a series of points served to pull them clear of the hosts. Barry-Murphy was pleased to have poured some miles into legs.

“It was a good workout for both teams,” he said.

“Today was a chance to give game-time to fellas and bring them back gradually. Conditions this year mightn’t always be the best but you have to make the most of it.”

William Kearney put in a good shift at corner-back while his twin brother Daniel scored four points from play, three in the first half. Paudie O’Sullivan’s goal, set up by Séamus Harnedy, helped to put Cork 1-10 to 0-4 clear before UCC were awarded a penalty.

Having been central to the rule-change, Anthony Nash ended up facing one under the new rules before taking one and the new Cork captain couldn’t keep out Jamie Barron’s effort, the students trailing by seven at the break.

When Spillane — who scored 1-4 and will surely feature during the league for Cork — added a second goal, there were just four points in it, but Cork never looked like being caught, with subs Cian McCarthy and Stephen Moylan helping themselves to points.

Cork face UL in the Waterford Crystal at CIT tomorrow though changes are likely. Barry-Murphy is happy with the choice of skipper to replace Pa Cronin.

“Pa wanted to take a break, we had a chat,” he said,

“He was an outstanding captain, on and off the field, for two years and I couldn’t express my appreciation highly enough.

“He wanted to concentrate on his own game and Anthony, we felt, was a great choice.”
