Roscommon got their season off to a flying start by beating IT Sligo in the Connacht League at Strokestown.
Leading 0-7 to 0-1 at the interval, manager John Evans was purring about this side’s workrate and attitude.
“I’m only concerned with the way we played. Our attitude and workrate was good. We would like to have scored a goal but we’re happy with the win,” he enthused.
Ciaran Murtagh and Colin Compton did most of the scoring damage and the duo accounted for the home side’s first two scores. Further points followed from Ciarán Cafferky, Mark Healy, Senan Kilbride and Murtagh (2) before Quinn ensured that IT Sligo had something to show for their first-half efforts.
Brian Gallagher hit IT Sligo’s first score from play at the start of the new half but Roscommon kept the scoreboard ticking over with points from Murtagh (45), Mark Nally (2) and Compton.
The game’s pattern continued, and although Gallagher, Quinn and Paul Varley pointed for IT Sligo, Roscommon cemented their dominance with scores from Compton, substitute Cathal Cregg and Murtagh to run out comfortable winners.
The game also marked the introduction of Tulsk native Michael Dufficy who has returned from Australia.
“We’re bucking the trend sending fellas away, fellas are coming back and that shows a lot about what we’re doing in Roscommon,” said Evans.
