Late five point scoring burst sees UCD prevail

O’Byrne Cup

UCD enjoyed a narrow first round O’Byrne Cup success over the home side in Dr Cullen Park yesterday. With 12 minutes to go a Hugh Gahan goal levelled for Carlow but five points on the trot by the students clinched a hard fought win.

It was close all through. With Westmeath’s John Heslin pulling the strings in the full-forward line for UCD the visitors led by four points in the second quarter but Carlow refused to buckle and were well in the game when only trailing 0-8 to 0-5 at the interval.

A resurgent Carlow side dug in but when push came to shove in the closing stages, it was the superior fitness and will to win which helped UCD over the finishing line.
