Late five point scoring burst sees UCD prevail

UCD enjoyed a narrow first round O’Byrne Cup success over the home side in Dr Cullen Park yesterday. With 12 minutes to go a Hugh Gahan goal levelled for Carlow but five points on the trot by the students clinched a hard fought win.

It was close all through. With Westmeath’s John Heslin pulling the strings in the full-forward line for UCD the visitors led by four points in the second quarter but Carlow refused to buckle and were well in the game when only trailing 0-8 to 0-5 at the interval.
