€100,000 Galway hurling deficit

The failure to finish the Galway Senior Hurling Championship on schedule has resulted in a severe financial impact in the county, with a profit of €67,000 last year being replaced with a deficit of almost €100,000 for 2014.

The Galway SHC final between Portumna and Gort takes place on Sunday but with the annual accounts running to the end of October, gate receipts from this or some of the other knockout matches are not included in the accounts for the Galway hurling committee.

“The gate receipts from these games will lead to a surplus for the year but showing a deficit on the annual accounts is one of the impacts of not finishing our championship as planned,” said hurling chairman Joe Byrne.
