Corner back Richard Hennessy rescued the New Ross school at the end of normal proceedings, landing a huge score from 65 metres to tie the contest for the sixth time.
The Wexford lads kicked on over the extra 20 minutes. Ten different scorers were on target for the victors against just four for the Cork side.
Midleton corner forward Liam Gosnell dazzled with 11 points over the hour (seven from play) and almost secured victory before Hennessy’s intervention.
Good Counsel held a 0-9 to 0-7 half-time lead. Rory Higgins impressed with three points while Gosnell accounted for all bar one of Midleton’s total. Good Counsel stretched three points away on the resumption but last year’s runners-up dug in. A full-back line inspired by Sean O’Leary Hayes tightened up as Midleton set up a fascinating finale. Four points in a row (three from Gosnell and one from sub Padraig O’Brien) gave Midleton a two-point cushion (0-14 to 0-12) with five minutes left. Luke Sinnott and Sean Nolan responded before Gosnell’s 11th point.
Counsel missed two chances before Hennessy’s huge effort (0-15 to 0-15).
The Wexford side dominated extra-time. Two Luke Sinnott frees and efforts from Darragh Hartley and Jimmy Sutton established a four- point gap in the first period. Further points through Sam Wall, Jim Ryan and Mark O’Neill saw Counsel home.
