Double delight for Ovens

Ovens Boys NS 3-5 Ballygarvan Boys NS 1-4

Double delight for Ovens

Superbly led by team captain Brian McNabóla and Tommy Murphy at midfield, they struck for a great goal in the 10th minute from Darragh O’Connell and Ballygarvan looked to be in for a drubbing. But Ballygarvan hit back almost immediately with a cracking goal by Niall Dowd and went on to enjoy a good spell from there to the break as Ovens led 1-3 to 1-1, but they were grateful to their ‘keeper Luke O’Doherty for two wonderful saves.

The Carrigdhoun school were on level terms early in the second-half but the game turned dramatically in Ovens’ favour after the impressive Tommy Murphy raced through before billowing the net from close range.

The Ovens side closed out the game with a third goal from Adam McCarthy.

Ovens Girls NS 3-7 Gaelscoil Carrigaline 0-2

With the boys title already won, the pressure was on the Ovens girls to complete the double and they did so to claim the DG2 title in some style. Ovens were marginally the better side in the opening half but while they enjoyed the lion’s share of possession, found scores hard to come by due to an excellent Carrigaline defence in which Sorcha Ní Chraobhaigh was prominent.

A goal by Eimear O’Donovan gave the Ovens girls an early lead. Carrig struggled to get out of their own half and only some great defending by Aoifa Ní Dhúill prevented them from falling further behind. As the half wore on the Carrigdhoun girls came more into the game and a Kelly Ní Sheasháin point meant they were still in contention at the break trailing 1-1 to 0-1.

On the changeover Carrig pressed hard for a goal but were denied by a point blank save by Ovens’ keeper Louise Ambrose. It was the closest they got as a highly efficient Ovens side, superbly led by Meadbh Kelly and Aóibhe O’Brien, kicked five points in a row and they killed off the Carrig challenge with a goal from Eimear O’Donovan.

Scorers for Ovens: E., O’Donovan 2-0; A. O’Brien 0-4; M. Kelly 0-3; M. O’Callaghan 1-0.

Scoil Bhríde Eglantine 2-6 St. Catherines, Bishopstown 2-3

St. Catherines served notice from the throw-in when Éadha O’Mahony crashed home a goal only to have it disallowed for over-carrying. It mattered little however because a minute later she repeated the feat and this time the goal stood.

Undeterred Eglantine hit back for similar score by Meg Ryan and it was nip and tuck for the remainder of the half at the end of which the Bishopstown girls led a 2-2 to 1-2 lead thanks to a second Éadha O’Mahony goal.

The second-half developed into a tremendous battle. Eglantine were grateful to their goalkeeper Rachel O’Callaghan, who made two superb saves to keep her side in the game, but three points in a row, two by Meg Ryan, had the sides level at the three quarter stage. Amid tremendous excitement Éadha O’Mahony edged the Saints in front with a point but in hectic closing minutes a cracking goal by Meg Ryan finally broke the ’Town challenge. and Maria Angland’s point ensured the title went to Eglantine.

Scorers for Eglantine: M. Ryan 2-3 (0-2 frees); M. Angland 0-2; C. O’Sullivan 0-1.

Greenmount Boys NS 5-3 Blarney Street Boys NS 3-5

IT took extra-time to decide the outcome of the Urban F2 final. There was no hint of the added time as Greenmount stormed into a 4-1 to 0-0 lead midway through the first-half, Jack Sexton and Lorcan O’Connor bagging a brace of goals each.

Led by the towering figure of Sandro Taveres at centre back, Greenmount, playing some delightful football, were full value for their lead but two points by Jordan Waters and 1-1 by Darren Heslam gave Blarney Street some hope as they went in trailing 4-1 to 1-3.

The Greenmount scores completely dried up in the second-half as the Blarney Street defence tightened up with wing back Auit Navamani particularly impressive. A Jake Murray goal threw the issue wide open and with Greenmount defending desperately, Blarney Street drew level thanks to 1-1 by Jordan Waters, to force extra time.

Greenmount availed of the brief respite to refocus and a Jack Forde point gave them the lead at the end of the first period of extra time. The issue was still wide open throughout the second period but a goal by Stephen Morrissey finally decided this thrilling contest in Greenmount’s favour.

Scorers for Greenmount: J. Sexton, L. O’Connor 2-0 each; S. Morrissey 1-0; J. Forde 0-3 (0-2 frees).
