Clinical Scoil Maria Assumpta take early control

Four points in the opening eight minutes, from Sophie Thompson (two), Ciara Golden and Nicole Olden, set the Ballyphehane school on their way before a brilliant ground shot from Jesse Mendez flew to the top corner of the Scoil Mhuire net.

Ciara Hill’s point made it 1-5 to 0-0 at half-time and the centre-forward dominated proceedings at the start of the second-half. She added two more points to further buttress the lead, though Scoil Mhuire began to threaten a comeback as Allie Ní Chléirigh pointed and then Amy Ní Mhurchú linked well with Anna Ní Chreimín de Buitléir to fire to the net.

Hill responded with a quickfire 1-2 to settle any Maria Assumpta nerves and from there to the end, it was exhibition stuff. Golden and Thompson both scored goals and Mendez added two late points, though Ní Chléirigh did get a late consolation for Scoil Mhuire.

Ballinspittle NS 8-7 Timoleague NS 2-4

Midfield powerhouse and captain Siobhán O’Donovan was the star, scoring 6-4, as Ballinspittle NS recovered from a slow start to win the DGF6 title at Páirc Uí Rinn.

Though attacker Grace O’Reilly had put Ballinspittle in front, Timoleague looked to have taken control as their star midfielder Katelyn Dineen reeled off four consecutive points while Caitlyn Campbell also impressed.

Coming up to half-time, though, O’Donovan and Ballinspittle took over. Two points got them back on track and then a brilliant individual goal ensured that they led by 1-3 to 0-4 at the break.

It was the period immediately after the resumption where Ballinspittle made the game safe. O’Donovan scored two more goals and added a point before Maebh O’Leary also raised a green flag to leave it 4-4 to 0-4.

Some good saves from Timoleague goalkeeper Natalia Siwek prevented the lead from growing and then Dineen gave them hope with two goals in quick succession. Ballinspittle weren’t to be denied, however, as O’Donovan managed to get a hat-trick of goals in the closing stages and Tatanya Hickey also struck for one.

Scorers for Ballinspittle NS: S O’Donovan 6-5 (one free), M O’Leary, T Hickey 1-0 each, G O’Rielly 0-2.
