Galway manager’s job up for grabs

A major doubt has emerged about Anthony Cunningham continuing as Galway hurling manager, with clubs in the county seeking nominations for the position.

Cunningham’s three-year term as manager ended with the All-Ireland qualifier defeat by Tipperary, but, while he has indicated a desire to continue, Galway clubs have decided to open up the position to nominees.

Delegates have decided to seek nominations for the job by August 5 with interviews for the position to take place before a decision is reached by the county committee. The manager will be appointed for a two-year term and it is expected that he will be in place by the end of August or into September.

Galway hurling committee chairman Joe Byrne said this was the process for appointing a manager.

“Ultimately, it is the clubs in Galway who decide who the manager will be. The process is that when a manager’s term ends nominations are then sought for the new term,” he said.

“We are now seeking nominations for the position. It is up to the clubs to make nominations, interviews will be held and after the hurling committee makes a decision it will then be forwarded to the county committee and ultimately, then, the clubs will make the decision on who the Galway hurling manager will be.”
