A double goal blast within four minutes nearing the finish catapulted Wexford into the next round of the Leinster U21 hurling championship.
There was no doubting that the Slaneysiders were the better team at Nowlan Park last evening, but until sub Peter Sutton and the excellent Rhys Clarke struck in the 53rd and 57th minutes respectively, Kilkenny were hanging in.
Sutton’s goal decided it really, as it shot the gap up to a hefty 1-12 to 0-8.
Clarke’s goal made absolutely certain that the defending champions would face Offaly in the next round.
Kilkenny started backed by the light wind, but they lacked power up front.
In fact, they didn’t score until Richie Reid converted a free in the 24th minute.
By that stage Wexford had five scores on the board, and playing against the elements they were still good enough to lead by 0-6 to 0-3 at break.
Kilkenny had the gap back to two points at one stage during the second half, but they never looked like winning — a feeling underlined by Wexford’s late burst.
