Kerry want end to Rules Series and Railway Cup

Kerry club delegates want to abandon the International Rules Series and the Railway Cup.

The future of those competitions formed part of a lengthy debate around a Football Review Committee (FRC) document which dominated Monday night’s monthly board meeting.

Kerry chairman Patrick O’Sullivan welcomed the feedback and admitted it may start a consultation process.

“The feeling from the delegates at the meeting on International Rules and the inter-provincial competitions was that they should be scrapped. But at the end of the day, it was just a straw poll, and the start of a process of consultation and discussion and we will see what happens if or when they resurface in motion form. Until they are put before convention or when they are debated by the clubs, will we rightly know what way things will go. ”

He continued: “It was just straw poll of the opinions of delegates on what they thought of 14 proposals the FRC presented to them.

“There were positive reactions to the proposal for a national group having responsibility for all fixtures and completing the club championship in the calendar year, if possible.”

While delegates were in favour of just league finals (abandoning the semi-final concept) they rejected the notion that rules on collective training should involve significant financial penalties, because of the difficulty to police the matter in every county. A majority also favoured reducing the minor age from 18 to 17.
