Corca Dhuibhne find a bit extra

While the game went off without incident, once more a choice of venue left the winning manager, Eamonn Fitzmaurice, perplexed as there weren’t any shelter for spectators or dressing rooms.

“In fairness to the Ballyvourney club, the pitch was in great shape, bearing in mind how bad the weather has been. However, a perfect pitch with all the necessary facilities — the Dr Crokes pitch in Killarney was available — but for some strange reason, it was not fixed there, and it’s halfway for both sides. But from the point of view of the players, it was a disgrace that there wasn’t any dressing rooms for them to go into at half time, particularly with it being wet and so cold. (But) we are delighted to be still in the competition.”

Chorca Dhuibhne dominated the first quarter with Chríost Rí playing with a sweeper against the elements, but their lead could have been more — in the 14th minute, Chríost Rí goalkeeper Gary O’ Sullivan hauled down Tom Ó Suilleabháin inside the square and he was shown the only black card of the game, but reserve custodian Matthew O’Mahony saved the resultant penalty.

Chríost Rí then responded with a flurry of points including two Ian O’Callaghan frees, as Chorca Dhuibhne led 0-6 to 0-5 at the interval. Not enough, surely?

Then in the 47th minute, when John Good goaled, the Cork side appeared to take command (1-7 to 0-7) but the Dingle boys refused to accept defeat with Briain Ó Beaglaoich leading the comeback.

Chorca Dhuibhne came from three points down with 10 minutes to play, forcing extra-time, with two Tom Ó Suilleabhain points from play and a Cathal Ó Bambaire free, as the sidesfinished level, 1-7 to 0-10.

Early in the extra period, the Chorca Dhuibhne keeper knocked the ball into his own net in attempting to clear, but two Cathal Ó Bambaire points were followed by a Dingle goal from Maitiú Ó Flatharta, and a late Tom Ó Suilleabhain point was enough to see them through to an all-Kerry semi-final.
