Rebels to meet Déise in Thurles showdown

Cork and Waterford’s Munster quarter-final next May has been fixed for Semple Stadium.

Waterford had requested the council look into the possibility of staging the game in a refurbished Walsh Park as part of a possible home and away agreement with Cork for first-round games.

Munster chairman Robert Frost had also visited the stadium, which currently has a capacity of approximately 15,500 and will increase to 17,000 following completion of the works.

However, it was decided last night the game be staged on May 25 in Thurles, where the counties’ recent Munster SHC clashes have taken place. Waterford’s last home Munster SHC game took place in Walsh Park in 1996, against Tipperary.

Tipperary and Limerick will face each other twice over the same weekend next year: the footballers facing off in their quarter-final in the Gaelic Grounds on May 31, followed by the hurlers’ semi-final in Thurles on June 1.

Cork will face Waterford in their Munster U21 semi-final in Walsh Park on July 17.

Clare and Limerick’s quarter-final is scheduled for the Gaelic Grounds, either on June 4 or June 18.

The minor hurling quarter-finals will take place on April 16 with the football quarter-finals set for a week earlier on April 9.
