Leading 2-10 to 0-12 at half-time after playing with the breeze, the victors weathered a bright Bandon start to the second-half and then capitalised on defensive errors as Trevor Horgan and Luke Meade made it 4-14 to 0-5 with 11 minutes left.
While Michael Cahalane continued to convert frees for Bandon – he finished with 14 of their 18 points – there was no doubting the outcome at that stage, with Newcestown good value for the victory.
The foundations for victory were laid in the first-half when two goals in as many minutes moved Newcestown into an advantageous position. First, Horgan pounced when goalkeeper James McSweeney couldn’t claim a long Conor O’Neill delivery, and the same player was then bundled over for a penalty upon collecting a Peter Curran probing ball.
He made no mistake to leave it 2-5 to 0-4, and with Cian Healy in impeccable free-taking form and Micheál McSweeney excellent at midfield they pushed on. Bandon were too reliant on Cahalane for scores and though Mark Sugrue and Jonathan Mulcahy tallied neat efforts, they still trailed by eight at the break.
The move of full-back Philip Crowley to midfield paid early second-half dividends for Bandon, but the decision to twice go for goal from 20m frees did not. They were still in touch until Meade’s fine goal – just reward for his display – and Horgan then ensured it would be Newcestown advancing to meet Blarney in the county championship on October 5.
