Skipper Brosnan back in contention for Kingdom

Kerry skipper Eoin Brosnan made a surprise return to competitive football for Dr Crokes yesterday, intensifying speculation he may be involved in Sunday’s Munster SFC final against Cork.

Skipper Brosnan back in contention for Kingdom

Brosnan, who has been troubled by a series of injuries, scored a point from centre-back as the Killarney men lost to Kilcummin (3-6 to 0-9). He said of his injury lay-offs: “They have been completely unrelated, a calf injury first, then a quad in the other leg, and then a knee that I never hurt before in my life. But my entire career I have been very lucky but unfortunately all through this year I have been unlucky. I have picked up injuries this year that from my own point of view have been a pain in the backside.”

The All-Ireland winner played 70 minutes on Saturday in a trial game with Kerry and now, having played a full game with his club 24 hours later, it appears he may come into the reckoning as manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice juggles his defence following the injury which rules Aidan O’Mahony out of contention.

Ironically, it was up and coming Kerry underage midfielder Kieran Murphy who scored two Kilcummin goals while Jer Sheehan got the other as Kilcummin moved to mid table, joining Crokes on six points.

Kerins O’Rahillys return to the top of the league, leapfrogging neighbours Austin Stacks, when beating Waterville 0-9 to 0-8 without David Moran (with Kerry), Jack Savage (Kerry minors) and Barry John Keane (USA) thanks to some great midfield work by Mike Quirke and impressive displays from Barry John Walsh and Declan Quill.

A seven point haul from Eanna O’Connor was enough to give St Michael’s/Foilmore the points over Legion (1-18 to 0-12) and they move up to fourth, while Dingle, thanks to a goal from Joe Sheehy and some fine points from Marc Evans (2), Brendan Kelliher and Colm Moriarty, beat Rathmore (1-11 to 1-8).

Laune Rangers won the basement game with Spa (0-16 to 1-9), with Mike Frank Russell kicking the final three points of the contest for the winners.
