Milltown/Castlemaine win cracker

Milltown/Castlemaine 3-14 St Brendan’s 2-13 (aet)

St Brendan’s opened the scoring with a John Dowling point but that was as good as it got for the away side in the opening quarter as three Milltown scores followed from Ian Twiss, Pa Wren and Donal Kelliher.

Two goals from David Culloty rattled the home side but Milltown responded with one of their own through Twiss to leave the game hard to call, 2-4 to 1-5, at half-time.

David O’Callaghan and Twiss swapped points at the beginning of the second half before Milltown hit St Brendan’s for four on the trot with points from Twiss (2), Colm Kerins and Cathal Moriarty to make it 2-5 to 1-10.

Brendan’s equalised with two points in response before scores from Twiss and sub Paul Carroll edged Milltown back into a two-point lead with minutes remaining.

However, O’Callaghan slotted two points to bring the game to extra-time and the home side were dealt another blow when Kerry U21 Marcus Mangan was sent off for a second yellow in injury-time as the sides were deadlocked 1-12 to 2-9.

St Brendan’s opened extra-time with a point from sub Ivan Parker to edge back into the lead. Twiss and O’Callaghan swapped scores either side of a John Blennerhassett goal, after he ran all the way from corner-back to show great composure and put the home side two up. It was a lead they would never relinquish as the home side led 2-13 to 2-11 at the end of half-time in extra-time.

St Brendan’s substitute and Kerry minor panellist Ivan Parker made it a one-point game again at the start of the second half before an Ian Twiss free settled local nerves again in this rollercoaster of a championship encounter.

Then came the defining moment of the game, a high delivery from Kerins landed in the square, the keeper misjudged it and Twiss was on hand to net.

O’Callaghan kicked the final score for Brendan’s to end this epic battle as Milltown/Castlemaine escape to the third round while St Brendan’s must face Finuge next weekend.
