Sweeney saves UCC at the death

UCC 0-15 CIT 0-15 (aet)

With time running out, points from Pa Joy and Ciarán Sheehan looked to have given CIT victory as they held on to a one-point lead after coming back strongly in extra time, but Conor Sweeney’s injury-time free secured the draw for UCC.

While points from Conor Cox and Eoin Buckley had UCC off to a good start, they found themselves on the back foot for much of the opening quarter.

CIT enjoyed a lot of possession but they were far from clinical in front of goal, and though Philip O’Connor got them off the mark, by the 21st minute UCC led by 0-6 to 0-1.

Cox and Steven O’Brien impressed as they were more efficient when chances presented themselves, while Buckley was unlucky to fire over when a goal chance presented itself.

The strong wind was helping CIT, though, and Michael Vaughan had them back to within two points, 0-7 to 0-5, by half-time.

His namesake, the excellent Cathal, and Joy had them level before a minute of the second period had elapsed.

Though Cathal Vaughan put CIT 0-10 to 0-9 in front the 55th minute, Sweeney levelled and then Tom Hickey put UCC in front. In the second minute of injury time, however, Sheehan punched an equaliser after Cathal Vaughan’s 50m free — which was heading over — was taken down by the UCC defence in the goalmouth.

UCC threatened to pull away in extra time as Cox, Kevin O’Driscoll and Sweeney helped them to construct a 0-14 to 0-11 lead, but CIT showed good character and John Corkery and Sheehan cut the gap to a point by the turnaround.

They were stronger in the second period as UCC flagged, but Sweeney ensured that the sides would have to meet again to see who progresses to the last 16 proper.
