Glynn out of Wicklow’s championship campaign
Glynn, 30, broke his ankle against Meath in last year’s Leinster SFC opener and was ruled out for the remainder of the season. The versatile Rathnew clubman did not play any League football this year and Wicklow boss Harry Murphy has revealed that complications with Glynn’s recovery will sideline the former International Rules ace for the summer.
The news comes less than five weeks before Wicklow play Longford in first round of the Leinster SFC, on May 26 in Aughrim.
The absence of dual star Glynn is a massive blow to Wicklow – as the 2009 Allstar nominee captained the Garden County to Allianz Football League glory last year, before suffering that horrific injury against Meath.
But Wicklow, relegated from Division 3 this year, will be able to call upon former Tipp forward Brian Coen for the Longford clash — if he impresses in training and challenge games.
Coen, a Greystones-based Garda, transferred to St Patrick’s in Wicklow town earlier this year but needed to play a championship game with his new club before being eligible for the county.
Coen lined out for St Patrick’s in the Wicklow SHC against Carnew last weekend and Murphy confirmed: “He’s eligible now. He wasn’t eligible to play with us during the National League, when we could have done with anyone that we could get. In training, he looks like a decent footballer and from what we heard, he was making the Tipp team when they were getting promoted. We’re going to have a few challenge games. Brian will be looked at and hopefully from his point of view he will make the cut.
