O’Donoghue goal powers Avondhu past Muskerry

And in spite of being reeled in midway through the second half, when Muskerry took a one-point lead, the north Cork outfit responded magnificently hitting 1-3 to their opponent’s solitary point in the closing quarter.

The decisive goal, set up by county player Paudie Kissane, was finished to the net by full-forward Vincent O’Donoghue 10 minutes from time.

Avondhu exerted the pressure from the word go with points from David Pyne and Cian O’Riordan, but Muskerry achieved parity by 15 minutes. Avondhu clicked into action once more with Mikey Sheehan kicking some fine points to lead 0-7 to 0-4 at the break.

Muskerry lost Daniel Goulding to injury at half time, yet they rallied with four points on the spin to go one ahead, and the lead could have been greater had David Goold’s goal effort not drifted wide.

New Mallow signing James Loughrey notched an excellent point after roaming up field to tie the game on 45 minutes, but sub Darragh Ring handed the advantage back to Muskerry.

The match was there for the taking at this juncture and it was Avondhu who rose to the challenge. O’Donoghue’s goal in between a trio of points sealed the deal, sending them five points clear. Liam Shorten pulled one back at the death for Muskerry who are now out of the championship.
