O’Rourke’s football future ‘up in the air’

Meath star Shane O’Rourke is unsure when he will return to football.

The son of Royals legend Colm underwent surgery twice this year on a problematic hip and is continuing an intensive rehab programme.

But he admits his football future is ‘up in the air’ as he battles to regain fitness.

“I’d say it will be another few months before I have any idea of when I can play football again. At the moment I’m confined to doing rehab work in the gym, getting some rest and letting nature take its course, but I’m not anywhere near doing any running or any outdoor work. I’ve just got to be patient and hope things work out for me. It’s certainly been a very frustrating period over the last three to four years with all the injury setbacks I’ve had to contend with. For a long time it was thought my problems were groin-related until it was diagnosed that my hip was the issue.”

The Simonstown Gaels clubman devotes as much of his time as possible to his rehab programme. “I’d work out in the gym most days, and really you have to do that amount of work if you want to get back in playing condition again.

“It takes up a fair bit of your time, but in this regard I’d be no different from other injured players who have to put in a similar effort and commitment.

“If it turns out that I won’t be able to play on, it would be very disappointing. But at the same time I’d just have to be as positive as possible about the situation and get on with my life.”
