Haven and Nemoin cracking opener

Cork senior football champions Castlehaven will meet Division 1 league winners Nemo Rangers in the opening round of the 2013 championship.

The rematch of last month’s Kelleher Shield (league) final is the tie of the round from Saturday night’s draw at the end of the county convention.

Nemo and the Haven last played in the championship in 2008, with the Trabeg outfit winning after a replay before claiming a fourth consecutive title.

Elsewhere, Douglas meet Ballincollig for the third time in five years, the city side having won the previous two games, while St Vincent’s make their return to the senior grade with a clash against Newcestown.

St Finbarr’s, defeated finalists in 2009 and ’10 and who eliminated Nemo this year, have a city derby with St Nicholas, the losers having to play either Nemo or the Haven.

This year’s beaten semi-finalists, O’Donovan Rossa, have an all-West Cork tie with Dohenys, and Carbery Rangers, who lost to the Haven in the last four, were drawn against Newmarket.

The other two first-round games see Aghada meet 2009 winners Clonakilty and Bishopstown play Ilen Rovers.

In the senior hurling draw, city rivals St Finbarr’s and Glen Rovers are paired for the second year in a row and it will be the clubs’ fourth time meeting in three years.

Champions Sarsfields, seeking a fourth title six years, were drawn with Ballinhassig, who are back at senior following a one-year hiatus. Incidentally, when Sars won a first county in 51 years in 2008, they also met Ballinhassig in the first round, winning by a point. Bishopstown, defeated by Sars in this year’s final, play 2011 premier intermediate winners Courcey Rovers, and there is an East Cork derby between Bride Rovers and Carrigtwohill.

Newtownshandrum play Ballymartle in the first round for the second time in three years, Blackrock face Killeagh, Erin’s Own meet Na Piarsaigh and Douglas clash with Midleton.

It was also revealed at the convention that next year’s championships are likely to begin earlier to avoid fixture congestion later in the year

“The decision to start the championships later is having a detrimental effect, on the championships themselves and on dual clubs,” said secretary Frank Murphy.

“The Competitions Control Committee and the board will seriously have to reconsider the starting times of the championships.”

This did not meet with uniform approval from delegates, however. “If you start the championships earlier, you’re only increasing the gap in the middle, and then the concluding stages are run off like a fire-brigade situation,” said Midleton’s Pat Horgan. “Instead of starting earlier we should start later, much later.”
