Stamp calls on GAA to pay county players €100 a week

Former Wexford hurler Darren Stamp believes inter-county players should be paid a weekly allowance by the GAA.

The 31-year-old announced his retirement last week after 11 seasons, and more than 35 senior championships appearances, for the Model men.

But the Oulart-the-Ballagh club star wants county footballers and hurlers to receive financial rewards for their commitments which he describes as “now reaching professional status”.

Stamp reasoned: “When, one sees the amount of money been taken in for All-Ireland finals, the players deserve better. They are now talking of taking in some €5 million, while this year they will also take in an extra €3m for the hurling replay. It’s now time Croke Park gave something back to the players.

“Players in inter-county squads should be paid at least €100 per week along with expenses. I believe that’s not too much to ask.

“Given the demands now placed on players, to be involved at inter-county level is now reaching professional status. The players need more support, given the demands been placed on them.”

Though an All-Ireland senior medal eluded him, Stamp insisted he has no regrets from his time hurling with the county. And he predicts a bright future for Wexford in their quest to emulate the heroes of 1996 who claimed championship glory.

“I’ve enjoyed quality time both at club and county level. While I may not have enjoyed the success at county senior level, I always felt it a privilege to wear the purple and gold jersey.

“I have given my all in those years with the senior set-up but now I feel it’s time to hand over to the younger players coming through. There is now a professional set-up with the senior hurlers. There’s a quality management team in place who have the full support of the county board officer, unlike previous years. With this in place, hopefully they can progress, and move hurling forward in the county.

“I’ve six senior medals and look forward to adding to that. Winning a fourth county title in a row is now my goal. It’s not going to be easy. Every side is out there to beat us but that’s something for us to cope with. Just because we’ve won the last three titles does not necessarily mean it will make winning this year any easier.”
