Newcastle West send champions Monaleen crashing

The two in-a-row winners were beaten 0-10 to 0-8 by Newcastle West at the weekend and, having won just one of their five group games, only avoided a relegation play-off due to that win over St Senan’s.

Newcastle West, who had five frees from Thomas Quilligan, go into the semi-finals as winners of group one.

Joining them in the semi-finals will be Fr Caseys of Abbeyfeale, 0-15 to 1-3 winners over Mountcollins.

Former Munster champions Dromcollogher-Broadford booked their quarter-final place with a 0-15 to 1-8 win over St Senan’s.

They trailed 1-5 to 0-5 at the break with Mike Behan scoring the St Senan’s goal in the opening half. But two points each from Jason Stokes and Derry McCarthy in the second half propelled Drom-Broadford into the lead.

The big upset of the weekend was the progression of Ballysteen into the knockout stages. They were 1-9 to 0-11 winners over Ballylanders.

A Danny Neville goal had them 1-5 to 0-4 ahead at the break but Ballylanders hit the front in the second half before a late fightback from Ballysteen sealed a famous win, with the winning point coming from James O’Meara.

Galbally booked their place in the last eight with a 2-14 to 1-8 win over St Patrick’s.

James Ryan and Patrick Murphy got the all-important goals for the winners with Dermot Phelan replying for St Patrick’s with a goal from a penalty.

The fourth team in the quarter-finals is St Kieran’s, who defeated Adare 4-5 to 2-8. Anthony Molyneaux was the hat-trick hero for the winners with Jim O’Donovan getting their fourth goal.
