Myth of ’common sense’

The phrase ‘common sense’ is a major bugbear of mine.

There’s nothing more uncommon than common sense. The 50,000-plus crowd in Croke Park yesterday all have different interpretations of what those two words mean.

Yet it’s the most popular phrase when it comes to the officiating of games. A referee simply must control the game in accordance with the playing rules.
