Banty a wanted man in Monaghan
The Meath boss was expected to speak to county chairman Barney Allen yesterday after the Royal County’s championship exit to Laois on Saturday. The Corduff native’s two-year term has come to an end and he is unlikely to be renewed having failed to receive a simple majority of clubs’ support in the executive’s failed attempt to have him ousted in April.
He is expected to announce he will be stepping down from the position in the coming days and has already been nominated for his former Monaghan position, recently vacated by namesake Eamonn McEneaney.
A number of Monaghan players have contacted McEnaney to express support for him taking over again.
McEnaney sought an extension to his term as Monaghan boss in 2010 but stepped down having being told by the board he had to put forward his nomination for the position. This aggrieved the county panel of the time.
However, the presence of his former selector Bernie Murray among the five other candidates for the position could be crucial. After one season in charge of Monaghan, McEnaney jettisoned 1980s stars Murray and Gerry Hoey from his management team and there is support in the county for former minor boss Murray to get the role.
