Daly says €30 too much for tickets
The Dublin boss believes the €30 admission fee is too much and understands why many people will vote with their feet against it in Thurles.
“I think €30 is a bit saucy, you’d imagine €20 would be enough, just to encourage people to be there,” said the Clare native.
“The live television is a factor. For lads who have four or five kids, it’s tough going. I know myself with the way the diesel is.
“It is an expensive day and the match is on the television.
“You might be able to bring them for lunch and watch the match on the big screen somewhere and that’s tempting.”
Daly’s comments come in the wake of Waterford selector Ken McGrath’s description of the €30 ticket as “crazy”.
However, he was satisfied patrons got value for money from the last Munster SHC game between Tipperary and Limerick last month.
“I still enjoyed the Limerick/Tipp game. There was a real buzz in the crowd and two rivals bringing out the best in each other.”
Munster GAA deputy chief executive Enda McGuane says officials are confident a crowd of 15,000 will attend the game in Semple Stadium.
“Over 6,000 tickets have been sold at the moment. People forget tickets are being sold in Centra and Super Valu shops as well and they add into the mix. Based on two years ago when there was an attendance of 11,000 at this game on a wet Bank Holiday Monday, we’d be very optimistic of a prediction of around 15,000 for Sunday.”
There has been a slighter larger take-up in tickets from Clare but not as much as had been anticipated following negative reports from Waterford. But McGuane points out the walk-up crowd is still a major factor.
“Last year Clare sold 600 tickets for the Tipperary game in Limerick. That was the take-up from the county board yet there was in the region of 17,000 at the game.”
In relation to the disappointing take-up in the ticket packages and discounts, McGuane will review clubs getting the best discount deals.
“I was on WLR last Friday week speaking about the ticket packages, the €10 terrace ticket for the club, the €20 uncovered stand (group), €25 covered stand (group)... all the discounts that are there plus the €5 juvenile tickets.
“Our priority up to his point has been the clubs and they would always get the first option at the best quality tickets and best discount offers.
We have to look at everything at the end of the season and see how they worked and if there are other options to explore.”
McGuane said Sunday week’s other Munster semi-final between Cork and Tipperary is in line to attract a 30,000-plus crowd.
