Kildare reeling as Henry points Derry to victory

A whopping 0-12 from freetaker Paddy Henry got Derry off to the perfect start in the Christy Ring Cup but Kildare were left mystified with the referee as the Oak Leaf men scored 14 points from frees, and had 22 frees in total, to Kildare’s nine.

Kildare reeling as Henry points Derry to victory

To make matters worse for the visitors in Celtic Park, Derry’s final point was signalled wide by an umpire before referee Garrett Duffy overruled his official, although it was the correct decision as the ball clipped the post before falling between the uprights.

Early goals for both sides came inside the first 10 minutes but Derry had taken control by half-time, leading 1-11 to 1-9 heading to the dressing rooms. Their dominance continued in the second half as they built up a six-point lead at one stage but Kildare got back in contention when Paul Divilly netted a second goal.
