Cavan players make move against Andrews
It is understood that, immediately after their fifth defeat from seven matches at home to Antrim last Sunday, the players asked the board to make arrangements for a room in which they could hold a private meeting on Tuesday night.
Following that meeting in the Ramor United clubrooms at Virginia, a players’ representative contacted Reilly to request a meeting with the board at which the players will outline “a number of issues”.
Reilly is expected to meet members of the panel later this week after the county’s involvement in the Ulster U21 championship — the final of which took place last night in Enniskillen – ends. Reilly admitted the performance against Antrim was “totally unacceptable” but stressed: “Val [Andrews] is still the manager.”
Andrews stated himself on Sunday that the performance “wasn’t good enough” and that he “didn’t think it would be good enough for Cavan”.
The Dubliner, who returned for a second spell in charge of Cavan 18 months ago, is expected to stand aside at the end of this season.
However, depending on the outcome of the players’ meeting with the board, Andrews could come under pressure to step aside sooner.
Their championship results last year against Donegal and Longford rank among the heaviest they have incurred in the past decade.
