Prendergast calls time on 12-year Déise career
The Ardmore clubman calls it a day with four Munster SHC medals (2002, 2004, 2007 and 2010) and a National Hurling League medal from 2007.
“I just feel I have enough done at this stage,” Prendergast told The Irish Examiner yesterday.
“I’m involved for 12 years and feel that that’s probably enough.”
Prendergast, who made his debut against Laois on his club pitch back in 2000, when Gerald McCarthy was managing the county side, picked out the Munster title victories as his career highlights.
“I suppose in a dozen years you have ups and downs, but those were great days for all of us as players and obviously for the supporters, who followed us loyally through all the years.
“The one disappointment would be that we never won the big one, the All-Ireland. The lads still have a chance, though, they have a good team and a mix of young lads and experienced players. Hopefully they’ll manage it, even though it’ll be very tough.”
Prendergast, who starred at both wing-back and full-back for Waterford, identified Lar Corbett as possibly his toughest opponent.
“Lar was a very difficult man to mark, very quick, very accurate, but Henry Shefflin is obviously a fantastic player as well.
“Mind you, my own brother Seamus was a bit of a handful when we had matches at training!”
The good news for Ardmore club members is that the genial defender isn’t hanging his hurley up totally.
“No, I plan on playing on for the club for a few years yet. Playing intercounty hurling means that you have to put a lot of things on hold, including your club a lot of the time. I’m looking forward to pitching in for training with the lads again. Hopefully we can win something in the county.”
