Limerick unhappy to pay penalty as Dooley strikes

There was drama at the end of this high-scoring Allianz Hurling League game in the floodlit Gaelic Grounds on Saturday evening with Shane Dooley converting a controversial late penalty to secure a share of spoils for Offaly.

Referee Cathal McAllister deemed Seán Ryan was grounded inside the area following a heavy tackle from corner-back Tom Condon though most in the home crowd felt the defender had won the ball first.

The final score reflects the looseness of exchanges and were it not for outstanding goalkeeping by Limerick’s Nicky Quaid and a lack of a killer-punch up front by the hosts, we would have seen several more majors.
