Cooney to attend Stynes funeral

GAA president Christy Cooney is expected to jet to Australia this weekend to represent the association at Jim Stynes’ funeral.

Cooney, who last met the Dublin AFL legend at the first International Rules Test last October, will be in attendance at the state ceremony in St Paul’s Cathedral in Melbourne next Tuesday. Stynes’ wife Sam and children Matisee and Tiernan will then travel to Ireland to spread his ashes in a treasured spot he chose before he died. A big screen on nearby Federation Square will relay the funeral to mourners who can’t gain access to the cathedral, while a number of TV stations are likely to broadcast it.
