Dessie joins celebrations in Charleville

Dessie Fitzgerald, the Charleville hurler who was left temporarily paralysed following an accident during the Cork junior hurling semi-final last October, joined in the North Cork club’s celebrations of their county and Munster junior hurling triumphs last Saturday night, where Cork senior hurling captain Dónal Óg Cusack presented medals to the squad.

Fitzgerald, who spoke to the Irish Examiner last month about the remarkable recovery he has made since the accident, has been recuperating in the National Rehabilitation Centre in Dun Laoghaire but was present to partake in the club’s social in the Charleville Park Hotel. Cork captain Cusack tweeted after the event that he was “honoured to present Charleville players with their county and Munster medals”.

Fitzgerald, who is getting married on Friday, March 16 in Charleville, spoke yesterday on RTÉ Radio’s Morning Ireland programme with Des Cahill, with the interview receiving a hugely positive reaction.

A golf classic is being organised by the Charleville GAA club for Apr 11 and Apr 13 to raise funds for Fitzgerald’s continued recovery.
