GAA silent on Lyons’ pay claim

The GAA have declined to comment on Tommy Lyons’ allegation that he was asked to name his price in an interview for the Mayo job.

Speaking on RTÉ Radio One on Thursday, the former Dublin and Offaly manager said he was told to put into an envelope the figure he was looking for to be paid. Lyons claimed he then said he did not accept payment.

While Lyons is standing by his remarks, Mayo have strenuously denied the allegation.

However, it’s a matter Croke Park don’t intend wading into at the moment. “We won’t be making a comment on one county in the middle of the current process,” said GAA communications manager Alan Milton. “It’s an issue for Mayo.”

Kilkenny have named 12 of their 2011 All-Ireland winning side for tomorrow’s Division 1A opener against Tipperary in Nowlan Park.

The reasons for the absence of Henry Shefflin (shoulder) and Eddie Brennan (retired) are well-known but Richie Hogan is out after picking an injury playing for Leinster last Sunday.

Dublin manager Anthony Daly has handed Danny Sutcliffe and Shane Stapleton their league debuts for their away trip to Galway.

Waterford captain Michael “Brick’’ Walsh has been named at centre-forward for this evening’s game against Cork in Páirc Uí Rinn.

Meanwhile Kerry’s Tommy Walsh yesterday made his debut for the Sydney Swans in their pre-season NAB Cup victory over his old club St Kilda in Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium.
