Canavan takes helm at Fermanagh on three-year term

TYRONE legend Peter Canavan was last night named Fermanagh’s new senior football manager on a three-year term.

Canavan takes helm at Fermanagh on three-year term

Canavan succeeds John O’Neill after he stepped down from the position last month following a tempestuous season in charge.

Six-time All-Star winner Canavan takes the position after recently stepping down as manager of his own club Errigal Ciarán.

The 40-year-old, an All-Ireland winner in 2003 and ‘05, takes his first steps into inter-county management flanked by trainer Kieran Donnelly and selector Enda Kilpatrick on a three-year term with an annual review.

One of Canavan’s first tasks will be to entice some of the players who made themselves unavailable to O’Neill back into the Fermanagh fold.

Fermanagh start next season in Division Four after finishing fourth last year and face Down in an Ulster SFC quarter-final.

Meanwhile, members of the Carrickmore and Dromore clubs are to appear before a disciplinary hearing in Tyrone tonight.

They will be asked to account for their actions during last week’s Division One league final, which was marred by violence.

Officials of the board’s Competitions Control Committee (CCC) will quiz a number of individuals from both clubs in what will be a vital stage of a major investigation into disturbances in the closing stages of the game at Dunmoyle.

Fighting between players on the field spread to the stand, where a number of spectators sustained injuries.

The CCC has already viewed video footage of the incidents and studied the report of referee Cathal O’Hagan.

Violence erupted four minutes from the end of the title decider, which Dromore won by five points to complete the league and championship double.
