Tyrone to use video evidence to catch thugs
An investigation is already under way following a mass brawl which broke out close to the end of the tie between Carrickmore and Dromore.
Fighting also spread to the crowd, with several people sustaining injuries in an ugly confrontation in the stand at Dunmoyle.
Tyrone PRO Damian Harvey confirmed that video evidence will be used in the probe and he appealed to those involved in the disturbance to come forward and answer for their actions.
“The Tyrone County Board wish to confirm that an investigation into the incidents surrounding the O’Neills Division 1 League final has already begun,” said Harvey.
“The Tyrone Competitions Control Committee (CCC) will review the full match report from the referee and will also review video evidence of the game. The Tyrone County Board condemn unreservedly the actions of those people involved in fighting in the crowd.
“There is no place for scenes such as these in our games. The people involved should come forward and accept responsibility for their actions. Their failure to do so will only further discredit their own clubs and our association.”
The Carrickmore club also released a brief statement, which read: “An Charraig Mhor GFC condemn the violent scenes in the crowd towards the end of the Tyrone ACL final between ourselves and Dromore.”
The game erupted into violence four minutes from the end, with the Dromore four points ahead. Play was held up for almost 10 minutes as players became involved in nasty exchanges, before the disturbance spread to the crowd, with supporters becoming involved in a mini-riot.”
Croke Park spokesman Alan Milton insisted that it was a matter for the authorities in Tyrone to investigate.
“It’s a Tyrone matter for the Tyrone County Board to deal with and they’ve already indicated that they are pursuing an investigation into it. Our policy in situations like these is not to comment while there’s an investigation going on as we don’t want to interfere with it and we must be aware that there is due process here.”
Meanwhile, disgruntled referees are to meet with GAA officers in Galway this evening in an effort to quell a simmering row over the appointment of match officials in the county.
Referees in Galway are believed to be unhappy about the methods used in appointing officials to the top games in the county. A delegation of Galway referees will meet members of the Galway Competitions Control Committee this evening in a bid to resolve the issue. A spokesperson for the Galway referees declined to disclose the issues involved as they want to bring them to the CCC officials first this evening.
“There are issues there which need to be sorted out so hopefully we can do that,” said the spokesperson.
