KERRY defender Aidan O’Mahony has been ruled out of competitive action for the rest of the year after breaking a bone in his leg during Sunday’s Kerry Club SFC final victory over Laune Rangers.

O’Mahony ruled out for rest of the year

The Rathmore man has confirmed he broke his fibia in his left leg, during a clash in the early stages of the Kerry decider and while he played on for almost 50 minutes with the injury, O’Mahony now faces at least six weeks on the sideline.

With his left leg now strapped in a heavy cast following a visit to Kerry General Hospital, Rathmore’s star midfielder will not line out for Rathmore if they go forward as Kerry’s representatives in the Munster Club SFC, a major blow to the East Kerry club.

Rathmore will fly the Kerry flag in the provincial series if Dr Crokes lose this Sunday’s Kerry SFC final against Mid Kerry in Killarney.

The Kerry representatives are away to Waterford champions Ballinacourty in a quarter-final of the competition on November 6.

Speaking in the immediate aftermath of Sunday’s 0-12 to 0-10 victory over Laune Rangers, O’Mahony said: “When the tackle came in, I felt the crack. Playing in club finals you don’t want to come off. I couldn’t really move so the best thing for me was to be moved full forward.

“At half-time, the physio said he thought it was a fibula head that was after breaking so he cracked it in, and I got another 20 minutes in the second half.

“I tried to stay on as long as I could to help the lads.”

O’Mahony is expected to be fit for the start of Kerry’s National League campaign early next year.
