Glanmire end barren run
The East Cork side managed to deal with the conditions thanks mainly to the stellar work of midfielder Timmy Leahy and a first-half penalty from James Murphy. The left full-forward nailed a spot kick in the 6th minute to earn a three point advantage they managed to sustain ‘til half time (1-5 to 0-5).
Other stars on the day for Glanmire were veteran midfielder Mark Hopkins, half backs Brian Murphy and Fergal O’Brien and full-back Kieran Sheahan.
Ballydesmond upped the tempo in the second period as Donncha O’Connor began to show his class in attack, but further points from Murphy and Brendan O’Callaghan kept Glanmire’s noses in front.
A Donncha O’Connor point, after he cut in from the left, reduced the deficit to a point at one stage, though it was fitting that it was Glanmire midfielder Timmy Leahy, arguably the club’s standout performer all season, who clipped over the insurance point in injury time for Glanmire.
Of course, both sides are promoted to Division Three, but it was an important milestone for Glanmire, who were collecting their first senior county trophy in over two decades.
