Conway will not serve fifth year as Kerry chairman

KERRY GAA chairman Jerome Conway has confirmed that he will step down from the position a year earlier than scheduled.

Mr Conway told a Board meeting on Monday night that he will not serve a fifth year as chairman at it would only exacerbate a problem caused by the “five year limit” rule, which will see a number of experienced officers resigning their positions in 12 months.

“I am looking ahead and I see that nine of the top table will have to vacate their positions next year under the five year rule and that is too big a clear out in terms of experience and continuity,” the Laune Rangers official explained.

“By going a year early and with Patrick O’Sullivan (vice-chairman) also stepping aside, that will make things easier in twelve months,” said Mr Conway.

This move means that O’Sullivan will contest the position of chairman and is likely to be successful.

Other contenders, such as Ger Galvin, may focus on the position of vice-chair.

Delegates were also informed that the position of youth officer is being discontinued when MauriceO’Mahony steps down in December.

A new children’s officer will beappointed — not elected — on the recommendation of the County Executive and Mr O’Mahony, who liaises with the county minor management is seen as the most likely choice.

Meanwhile, the Kerry SFC finalbetween Dr Crokes and Mid-Kerry has been fixed for Sunday week,October 30, and will be played at Fitzgerald Stadium.

The Novice Final between Scartaglin and Brosna will be the curtain-raiser.

County Convention has been fixed for December 12 in Killarney.
