Lack of capital puts London plan in doubt
After the Exiles claimed their first championship win in 34 years last season delegates were expected to give the go-ahead for Paul Coggins’ side to become the first county from overseas to enter the pre-season provincial competition — but concerns over financing the participation remain.
It would cost the Exiles between £16,000 (€18,383) and £20,000 (€22,975) to take part in the league stages of the competition next season.
This would be based on a squad of 30 players and six mentors travelling for a double-header of games over two weekends.
If London made the ‘home’ league final that would cost an additional £8,000 (€9,189) approximately while it was unclear how a potential trip to New York in the annual FBD final would be funded.
“If we progress in this competition we simply don’t have the money to pay for it,” said board chairman Tommy Harrell.
Another board member told delegates: “We’re in it to win it I would assume, I know it’s only an exercise about trying to find your best squad, but it’s a dangerous one.”
While supporting London’s bid to take part in the FBD League in principle it is understood the Connacht Council will not assist the Exiles financially.
County board chiefs will meet with Coggins in the coming week to see if there is a way around the impasse.
Prior to this week’s county board meeting, Roscommon native Coggins had welcomed the proposal to have his side entered into the FBD League.
“The only way to improve is to play games and if you’re starting a few games behind everyone else each season you play an element of catch up.
He added: “We shouldn’t really be doing that.
“If London could get a few games under their belts before the first game in the National League I think it would result in improved league and championship campaigns.”
London are the only side to participate in the national football league without playing any prior competitive football beforehand.
