KILKENNY boss Brian Cody yesterday launched an impassioned defence of the current state of hurling and warned further tampering with the rules will destroy the game.

Fresh from securing his eighth All-Ireland senior hurling title as a manager on Sunday, he expressed his belief there has “been a concerted effort to take the physicality out of the game”. And Cody, who will soon sit on a newly formed Standing Rules Committee established by GAA president Christy Cooney, maintains there is no problem with the physical nature of modern hurling.

“The people who are tampering with this as far as I can see do not understand hurling,” he said.
